Cook County Family Connection partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of the Greater Cook County with our "I am Drug-Free" initiative, aimed at empowering youth to make positive and healthy decisions about staying drug-free.
For the past 3 weeks, the Boys & Girls Club of the Greater Cook County Area has focused on drug prevention with our “I-Am Drug-Free” program.
The initiative, aimed at empowering youth to make positive decisions, was funded by a mini-grant the Club received from Cook County Family Connection.
The program kicked off with a door decorating contest. Classes were challenged to design doors about drug prevention and the importance of staying drug-free. The entries included a variety of different themes. The themes included a Ghostbusters inspired door, “Drug Busters: We ain’t afraid to say no!,” “I’d rather eat bugs than do drugs,” and “Danger: Don’t do drugs!” Ms. Kristin Alexander’s class won the contest with a total of 65 votes. Their door, themed “We’re TOADALLY against drugs!” featured toads created by each of the class members.
On July 1, the Club hosted a parent engagement night where members were able to showcase their artwork and commitment to making healthy choices. The Club also gave out resources to parents about how to help their children grow up drug-free.
Ms. Beth Wright’s class did an interpretive presentation about saying no to drugs. Ms. Caia Davis’ class prepared and performed an original rap about the dangers of drugs. Mrs. Kristin Alexander’s class became an interactive art museum showcasing a gallery of artwork conveying the message of staying drug free. Ms. Shirley Pinkney’s class sang a song about living a drug-free life and discussed what happens if you do drugs.
The Club will continue the program with its upcoming “I Am Drug-Free” essay contest with the prompt, “Why is it important to be drug free?”
